Carnival of Horrors

—feeling worried :(

Dear Love Journal,

Love stinks. That is all.

At long last the time for the dreaded carnival rolled around. I wasn't looking forward to it for several reasons. For one thing, it reminded me of how I had let my friends down when I'd forgotten to decorate our booth because I was hanging out with what's-his-face. That's what I called him now. Saying his name was too painful. Now I hated the fact that his name was also my last name. I couldn't get away from that.

Secondly, all my friends had dates to the carnival except for me. I didn't have a job to perform at our fortune-telling booth because I had planned on spending the entire night with what's-his-face.

Anyways, my friends were super-troopers. They arrived two hours before the carnival began to help me set up.

We'd hung a sign that read "Fortunes" and decorated with all the stars and moons I'd made the day before, and it looked pretty good. I thought if I were visiting a carnival that the booth would make me want to stop and get my fortune read.

Once we were done decorating our booth, I decided to take a stroll and see what the other kids had come up with. Most of them had created some kind of game where you could win a stuffed-animal prize—bean bag tosses, dart throwing—typical carnival games. Ours was the only fortune-telling booth.

I passed the Avas’ booth—as pink and purple as it could be. It did look very professionally decorated with cut- outs of lip-gloss tubes and powder compacts. I couldn't help but to roll my eyes at their sign: "We can make you look ALMOST as beautiful as us."

Ava T. and Ava M. were setting things up. Ava G. was nowhere to be seen. Of course she would leave all the hard work for her loyal followers.

As the sun began to set, people entered the carnival grounds. It was showtime.

Marishca looked great as she sat at the table with her crystal ball. She had a purple scarf tied around her head while she wore a large white blouse and a long, flowing blue skirt. Lily-Rose sat with a stack of cards she'd purchased from a gift store, and Chirpy was ready to read palms. Jeeves stood in front of our booth trying to draw customers in. "Come one, come all. Come get your fortunes told by the one and only Madame Marishca. Find out what destiny has in store for you."

A man and his wife stopped by the booth. The man sat at the chair across from Marishca. I stood nearby because I wanted to see how Marishca planned to pull this off.

She closed her eyes and waved her hands over the crystal ball she had found at a thrift shop for three bucks. "Oh," she said, nodding. "I see somezing."

"What?" the man asked eagerly.

"You and your wife are expecting a baby."

"Yeah," the man said.

"The baby will be a boy. He will be a bright, happy, healzy child.
